Testimonials 2006

Hello, I'm Qi, a senior student majoring in electrical engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China.

This summer I have taken 8 weeks at ECE department of University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. I worked there as a research assistant while under the guidance of Dr. Hayat. With the help of Dr.Hayat's graduate student Jorge Pezoa, I made some progress in the non-uniformity correction for infra-red imaging system. Besides, Both Dr. Hayat and Jorge Pezoa offered me a new understanding about academic research and electrical engineering, and they taught me how to deal with the real problems.

To be honest, I think that UNM is the very place to do some academic research. It has a strong interaction between the professors and the graduate students. The professor can give you much useful guidance through face-to-face talk. Also staffs there are very nice. They take care of every details so that students can concentrate on their research. Plus, UNM has very beautiful scenes such as duck pond. Taking a nap on the lawn by the duck pond was my way to relax and recharge myself:)

I am quite thankful to Dr. Hayat and Jorge Pezoa for the guidance they gave me. Thanks CSFA@UNM for accommodating me very well in Albuquerque. In the end, thanks to Dr. Shu and everyone who works for EYES program for offering me the opportunity to have this unforgettable summer at UNM. In all, I think EYES program is really fascinating:)

Hi, I am Pooja Singh, a Senior Undergraduate in Electronics & Communication Engineering at IIT Roorkee. I did my internship under Professor Sanjay Krishna, on the "InAs/InGaSb Strain Layer Superlattice Infrared detector material". Working with the dedicated research group, in itself, was highly motivating. It also provided me with an exposure to some latest scientific research in the field of optoelectronics. CHTM has well-equipped labs where devices are designed, fabricated and evaluated in-house. Seeing all these processes, which I had only read in books till then, was fascinating.

As for the fun part, one cannot wish for more, having awesome places like 'Las Vegas' and 'The Grand Canyon' nearby. We were also provided access to the university gym and other sports facilities. The entire experience was made even more memorable because of the extreme care and help that each one of the interns got from the India Students Association at the University.

I am really grateful to Professor Krishna and The University of New Mexico for providing with this opportunity. From my experiences during the internship, I strongly feel that the University is a very good option for students applying for graduate school.

Coming from an IIT where theory is over-emphasized, it was a great learning experience to work in an experimental facility (CHTM, UNM). Theory has never been as interesting as it was when trying to explain experimental observations related to a cutting edge technology (GaSb/GaAs Interfacial Misfit Arrays). On top of that, work never became a burden because of the lively research group (Dr. Huffaker's group) I had and due to the helpful faculty (Dr. Huffaker, Dr. S. Krishna and Dr. Dawson). Orientation was very well organized and last but not the least, Indian Student Association (ISA) was really helpful in making this summers a memorable one.

Hi , I am Srikant, presently in my final year of Undergraduation at IIT Madras.

I got this splendid opportunity to do my Summer Internship at University of New Mexico. Right from the moment I was selected, I was very much excited to get to the place and work in the CHTM ( Centre for High Technology Materials) facility. When the time had come and I was in Albuquerque, I knew it was my chance to grab the experience !

When we reached Albuquerque, we were warmly received by the ISA ( Indian Student Association ). Their presence during my stay made me feel very comfortable.

During my intern at CHTM, I was guided by Prof. Ravi Jain and his PhD student Wang Li. They were very helpful and imparted in me valuable knowledge while doing my experiments. I worked in the area of Nonlinear Optics, in the Optoelectronics lab. I can say for sure that working in such an ultra-modern lab facility is something great and gives an interesting research experience.I worked on the - 'Determination of Third Order Nonlinearity in the samples - CdSe Quantum Dots and CdTe bulk' through Z-Scan and Inverse Transmission experiments.

It was not - 'all work and no play' . The organizers took care of that too. We were issued ID cards to use the UNM Lobo ( sort of recreation ) facility. Also, the ISA students had done a great job for us in arranging a nice rented house and occasionally organizing cultural get togethers. They had even arranged for us a trip to Grand Canyon, thanks to Mr. Kishan Wahi.

In sum, my experience at UNM was very enthusing, stimulating and its moments long cherishing. After my Internship experience, I am excited to do my graduate studies in Electrical Engineering.

I am Siva Kumar, Final year Undergraduate student at IIT Madras.

I did my intern in SPCOM lab in the field of Signal Processing under the guidance of Prof. Balu Santhanam. The experiences in the lab and the interactive sessions with Professor Balu have given me a flavor of what research is.

For students considering Graduate School and planning to pursue a career in research, EYES intern is the right thing to look at.

The high degree of student professor interaction in the institute stimulates quality learning. The state-of-art lab facilities are conducive for students to gain valuable practical knowledge. The institute offers extensive research facilities which helps in gaining an in-depth knowledge in the fields concerned.

I strongly advice to opt UNM as a Graduate School.

Hi, I am Bo, last year EE undergraduate at Shanghai Jiaotong University, China.

The golden summer days in UNM are unforgettable. EYES program gave me a precious opportunity to experience leading research facilities and advanced technology.

Prof. Christos Christodoulou was my mentor. He is a professor with profound knowledge and he is also a gentleman with innumerable jokes. Under his supervision and the instruction of his graduate Lilla, I was doing on an antenna project, in which I managed to design, build and test a microstrip antenna and an array of two microstrip antennas. Moreover, I learned how to use IE3D, a computational tool based on the method of moment, learn how to use milling machine and how to run network analyzer.

The life in Albuquerque is fabulous. I was surprised to know that Albuquerque is a sister city with my home town Lanzhou, China. It makes me feel like at home. I visited famous art city Santa Fe, skiing resort Taos in the weekends and toured in Los Angeles after the intern. I cherish the beautiful memories.

I would like to say thanks to many people. Doctor Wennie Shu and Mrs. Maryellen Missik-Tow concerned us with every detail. Lilla, Nan and Kim in the lab taught me a lot in the project. CSSA and Chinese students in UNM helped us with open arms. Thank you all!

I am Deepak Kumar Garg, Fourth Year Undergraduate at Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India.

The 8 weeks EYES program gave me a whole new attitude towards scientific research and to life as a graduate student in United States. Not only it gave me an opportunity to work with leading research faculties, taught me many new things and polished my engineering skills.

I still remember the night when I stepped out of airport at Albuquerque, being first visit to US and after 30 hours without sleep, I had mixed feelings of excitement and confusion. But ISA helped us a lot - from finding apartment for us, receiving each of us at airport, to helping us at every instant.

I worked under the supervision of Prof. Majeed M Hayat at ECE department on topic "Equalizers for Ultra fast Avalanche Photodiode based Integrate and Dump receivers". I am thankful to Prof. Majeed Hayat and Peng Sun for the guidance and help they provided me. I really enjoyed the friendly and informal environment where I got the opportunity to work.

Apart from work we had a lot of fun. I visited Las Vegas, the entertainment capital of the world and Grand Canyon, a natural wonder of the world. All those memories are still fresh in memory. All the fun and experiences that I had, made this summer as the best summer of my college life.
