I have had a bent for research since before I joined college. After joining the Department of Electrical Engineering in the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, I kept on pursuing opportunities that would give me an exposure to scientific research. I came to know from one of my professors about the EYES program in the ECE Department at the University of New Mexico. I applied and was thrilled to be selected. I must say, this was the the best thing that has happened to me in my 3 years as an undergraduate.
I was alloted a project on Quantum Dot Infrared Photodetectors under the guidance of Prof. Sanjay Krishna. To get an opportunity to spend a few weeks as an intern in the US is in itself great, but to get to be involved in cutting edge research while still an undergraduate, to get to learn about this entirely breathtaking field of work, to be an active participant and collaborator in a team of brilliant scientists no less than the who’s who of the field, is an experience that beggars description. I received ample support and encouragement from my guide Dr. Krishna and my mentor Ajit Barve, in all aspects, including non-academic.
Another aspect of this internship is my experience in and around Albuquerque. Albuquerque is a wonderful, laid-back town, but by no means a bore. The Department sponsored an evening out at an arcade for us. We also went to Santa Fe, the state capital, and the oldest town in North America, as well as, as some may say, the cultural capital of US. Albuquerque is surrounded by mountains, and hiking is a popular activity here. We hiked up the La Luz trail in the Sandias. I would recommend Santa Fe and La Luz trail as some experiences of a lifetime to all. The way we were pampered by the Department, and especially Anna, who was kind and generous to a fault and was there at every step to assist us, we may as well have stayed back!
All in all, I must say, this internship has been a defining experience in many ways for me, and I would urge all to participate in this program. What you’ll find will be beyond your expectations.
