Edl Schamiloglu’s group is actively working on their $1.2M ONR grant, awarded in 2006. This is a collaborative effort with professors Christodoulou and Gilmore and with the University of Michigan and SAIC.
Professor Schamiloglu presented invited talks describing this research at the BEAMS Conference in Xi’an, China, and at the EUROEM Conference in Lausanne, Switzerland, both in July 2008. Professor Schamiloglu’s research is also supported by a new three-year grant from AFOSR (together with Professor Gilmore, and supplemented by a 2008 DURIP Instrumentation Grant) that focuses on minimizing surface plasmas within high-power microwave sources.
A recent trend in Professor Schamiloglu’s research is increased support from industry. He has support from Ktech Corporation to study frequency-tunable relativistic backward-wave oscillators, and he has an STTR with Sienna Technologies to develop novel high dielectric constant polymers for pulsed power applications.

Finally, Professor Schamiloglu hosted Dr. Jose O. Rossi from INPE (Sao Paulo, Brazil) during the 2007-08 academic year. Dr. Rossi spent his sabbatical collaborating on the dielectric development work supported by Sienna Technologies. Professor Schamiloglu is looking forward to hosting Dr. Jeonghyeon Kuk from South Korea during the upcoming academic year.
Professor Schamiloglu was the general chair of the 2007 IEEE International Pulsed Power Conference and the 34th IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science. He chairs the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society’s Pulsed Power Science and Technology Committee, and he is a senior editor of IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science.
