Director of University Programs at Department of Homeland Security Speaks at UNM
03/25/2005
Many doors are open to students and faculty when it comes to
participating in our nation's homeland security initiatives.
Dr. Melvin Bernstein, Director of University Programs for the Department
of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate, got his audience
thinking about that during his visit to UNM on March 24, 2005. He talked with
UNM students and faculty about a many-tiered topic: the multiple roles
and opportunities that exist for university-based research and education
in homeland security.
U.S. universities continue to demonstrate an important and successful
tradition of helping our nation respond to national emergencies. This
ability and commitment is of particular importance for homeland
security, where the problems and knowledge gaps cross and link most
disciplines and where there are growing needs to prepare current and
future generations of researchers.
Dr. Bernstein discussed these challenges and opportunities, focusing on
programs being developed by the Office of University Programs in the
Department of Homeland Security. These include university-based Centers
of Excellence, Cooperative Centers with other federal agencies, and a
number of educational and research opportunities for students and faculty.
Dr. Bernstein was invited by UNM's Institute for Infrastructure Surety
(IFIS) as part of its Distinguished Lecturer Series. Prior to his
lecture, Dr. Bernstein was briefed by several faculty affiliated with
IFIS on their ongoing research activities
pertaining to the surety of civilian infrastructure.
