Croatian Award Recognizes ECE Grad Student
ECE doctoral student Ivana Palunko is among three winners of the 2009 National Science Award granted by Croatia's National Endowment for Science, Higher Education and Technological Development. The organization grants the award in collaboration with the daily newspaper, Novi list, of Rijeka, Croatia.
Palunko earned the award in the field of technical and biotechnical sciences for the journal paper based on her master's thesis titled "Small helicopter control design based on model reduction and decoupling." Her work deals with mathematical modeling and control of small unmanned helicopters.
Palunko has been working with ECE Professor Rafael Fierro since fall 2008 in his Multi-Agent, Robotics, Hybrid and Embedded Systems (MARHES) Lab.
The award ceremony, held April 7 in Rijeka's City Hall, emphasized that the winners of this prestigious award represent the future of Croatian science. Those present at the ceremony included Dr. Daniel Rukavina, rector of the University of Rijeka, and Mr. Zlatka Komadina, prefect of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, in which Rijeka is located, as well as representatives of Croatia's Agency for Higher Education and its Ministry of Education and other members of Rijeka's local and academic community.
The Science Award recognizes the scientific research of young Croatian scientists in the social, natural, biomedical, technical and biotechnical fields. Palunko's award included 20,000 kuna, equivalent to about $3,570, along with a mobile phone and a Macintosh computer.
Congratulations, Ivana!
