Robots a Rave at Bernalillo High

01/12/2006

ECE undergraduate assistant Ron Denny, left, answers questions about UNM's robots.
The 2005 RoboRave competition at Bernalillo High School on Dec. 4 featured eight Lobot Jr. robot platforms demonstrated by ECE's IDMARS lab team.

"Lobot Jr. is picked as the platform for the level-four competition next year in Las Cruces," said lab director Dr. Nader Vadiee. He said the platform was developed by ECE graduate student mentors for SIPI students and is now called RoadRunner 2.

The Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) is a national Indian community college and land grant institution here in Albuquerque.

The IDMARS lab and ECE were among the sponsors of the RoboRave event. The lab's Lobot Jr. mobile robot kit is a teaching aid that covers engineering, science and math skills.

Bernalillo High School students check out Lobot Jr. designs at RoboRave on Dec. 4.
Since the inception of the first RoboRave ("robots are very educational") in fall 2001, its goal has been "to educate, encourage and nurture our children in regards to career pathways in high-wage, high-technology fields," according to Prof. Vadiee. "Along with this we wish to challenge popular culture's message that math, science and technology are not fun."

IDMARS is the Intelligent Distributed Multi-Agent Robotic Systems Laboratory located on the lower level of the ECE building.
