Donation
In July and August of 1999, Research Assistant Professor Frank Hegeler secured a donation of four HP8753D network analyzers and one HP85046A S-parameter test set from Hewlett-Packard for the EECE Department. The donated rf equipment arrived in September and October of 1999, and will be used in the undergraduate microwave and wireless communication laboratories this semester. The value of this equipment is $157,390.

Professors C. Abdallah and Ramiro Jordan attended the first UCSD Conference on Wireless Communications, held on March 8-10, 1998. Their analysis, based on meetings and extensive discussions with companies and regulating agencies are the following:

There is a an urgent requirement in developing expertise in the wireless communications area at UNM.

With the current faculty, facilities, and research personnel, it would take about two years for UNM to achieve the level of expertise currently associated with leading centers for wireless communications.

Companies and agencies in attendance have also stressed the growing need for expertise in the wireless communications area which is expected grow by ten folds in ten years.
